Computer Science & Telecommunications | College of Arts and Sciences

Academic Calendar
Spring 2008

Academic Programs
Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications offers three majors and two certificate programs. Courses are also provided for computer literacy. All courses presented for the major and minor must be approved in accordance with approved curriculum check sheets and must be passed with a grade of C or higher. Due to the rapidly changing nature of this field of study, any courses taken more than eight years ago cannot be counted towards degree requirements. A double major in computer science and network computing is not offered because of the aligned nature of these two programs.

Telecommunications

The science behind the telecommunications industry has both flourished and changed dramatically in recent years. While it once focused on interconnecting people, simple digital equipment and analog devices over an existing copper-pair phone systems, the current science has blossomed into the new concept of Network Computing and includes such sub-fields as intercontinental digital networks, gigahertz data networks, distributed systems, wireless communications, network security, and the Internet. As such, while Network Computing still shares common technologies with a fundamental program in computer science, it must focus specifically on issues in Network Computing as outlined in our curriculum.

BGS / BPS in Computer Science and Telecommunications

  • is a fully accredited undergraduate degree program designed for adults 24 years of age or older
  • takes up to one-third less time than a traditional bachelor's degree
  • prepares you for graduate and professional study and for professional careers
  • combines knowledge of the liberal arts with concentrations in 30 professional and liberal arts degrees
  • is offered by the Evelyn T. Stone University College

Fast-Track Degree Completion Programs

For students who have completed their Associate's Degree (AA or AS), the BGS / BPS Program features an exciting new series of Fast-Track Degree Completion Programs, designed to streamline the education process for adult students making the transition from community college to Roosevelt University. Students retain the benefits of the adult-oriented BGS / BPS Program by taking the introductory course, Methods of Critical Reasoning, one Senior Seminar, and the Senior Thesis, in addition to courses in their program of study. Eligible students may complete their BGS degree in as few as 30 hours. Fast-Track Programs are offered for both computer science and telecommunication.

Certificates in Computer Science & Network Computing

These certificate programs are designed for those who want to gain enough knowledge quickly to immediately enhance their employment opportunities in the fast-growing information technology arena. A major advantage of this program is that courses earned in these certificates may be later applied towards a bachelor's degree.

The certificate in computer science consists of seven computer science courses plus one or two math prerequisites. The certificate in network computing consists of five network computing courses and one math prerequisite. See a computer science advisor for more details, including a list of the relevant courses.
